The GranFondo Phenomena
Posted: Aug 11 2011 in Commentary, Events, We Ride

What is this Fondo thing?
The term Gran Fondo is Italian for a long distance, organized, mass participation cycling event. It’s mainstream introduction to B.C. was the inaugural RBC Whistler GranFondo in September 2010. Last year's event took place on a glorious late-summer day and provided a fantastic experience for the 4000 cyclists riding the beautiful route from Vancouver to Whistler (120 KM). With over 7000 registrants signed up for the 2011 Whistler GranFondo and more Fondos popping up across the country, it’s clear the Fondo phenomena is quickly catching. The great thing about the Fondo format is that all types can participate.
If you own a coveted spot in the 2011 Whistler Fondo you’ll likely fall into one of three categories:
The NEWBIE
perhaps inspired by friends success in last years event, you’ve invested money into your first road bike, or dusted off the old one and you are on your way to trying your first organized cycling event
The SEASONED CYCLIST
You are the cyclist that gets out on a bike (road riding, commuting, mountain biking) on a regular basis. You may have completed a previous Fondo, or other organized cycling events like the Pacific Populaire, Ride2Conquer cancer, etc.
The ROADIE
You posses shaved legs, a bike probably worth more than the price the average persons paid for their first car and your UCI license sits front and centre in your wallet, located just ahead of your Driver’s license and pics of the family.
If you are one of those new to road cycling, let alone the Fondo experience, you maybe feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of pedaling from Vancouver to Whistler, that’s fair - successfully finishing the Whistler Fondo is no small feat. However, the month leading up to the event is the time to finish preparing your mind, body, and bike for what’s ahead. Over the next 4 weeks I will share with you tips for preparing for the Fondo.
