Bike Fitting Services

Well we aren’t going anywhere without a bike so let’s start there. If you have been waiting to purchase THE bike you want for the fondo than now is the time as you want to be sure to get a few training rides on your own bike. Get into your local shop and tell them what you want to do and how much you want to spend.

I will give you a little tip when determining budget. Bikes are similar to most other commodities - the more you spend the more value is packed into the bike. But their are diminishing returns on how much you spend. By that I mean the jump in quality and value from a $500 bike to a $1000 bike is almost 100 percent or double the bike. But the difference between a $1000 bike and a $2G bike is a little less than double; similarly the jump between a $5G bike and a $10G bike is a smaller percentage of improvement again. That 10G bike is the equivalent of a Maserati but not everyone needs a Maserati.

So push a pencil around and decide what you can afford - factor in gear that includes a helmet, shoes, clothing and tools for road side repairs. Plenty can be written about how to chose a bike - do your research and don’t be afraid to ask questions. A good shop will be happy to walk you through the experience.

When purchasing a bike be sure the shop takes the time to properly fit the bike to you. If you have a bike and are not feeling comfortable on it than go back to your shop, check in with a cycling coach or consult a bike fitting service. To complete the Whistler GranFondo will require being on the bike for a serious chunk of time. Good fit is important for being comfortable during your rides. Poor fit can contribute to fatigue and as a result can affect your efficiency and safety on the bike.

The beauty of cycling is that ultimately -  regardless of style, materials, price, brand etc - the experience is not about the bike. A great cycling experience will be a result of your own preparation and work.

Next up. You have the bike, what about preparing the body?  We will talk about training rides and training plans.
