I have an older bike (1993) with a 7 speed dérailleur. I need to replace the rear wheel. I have a 8/9 speed wheel. Can I reliably use the 8/9 speed wheel and 8 speed cassette with the existing 7 speed rear dérailleur - just not use the largest cog?

Hi Bretzki,

Thanks for the query.

The spacing of a 7-speed cassette is different from an 8-speed so, assuming you are using indexing shifters not a friction based thumb shifter, your 7-speed shifters will not reliably shift between gears on an 8-speed cassette.

You can use an 8/9 speed wheel with a 7-speed cassette with a spacer on the inside.

Cheers,
