Ibis Mojo HD - How’s it ride?

Posted: Apr 24 2011 in We Ride

I have been on a lot of bikes in the last two years. I’ve ridden a few of the categories, including DH, All-mountain,  and Freeride. With the Mojo I was looking for something that would allow me to ride all of the local mountains (Cypress, Fromme, Seymour and Burnaby) along with some park riding (90% SilverStar, 10% Whistler). My bike needed to be light enough that I could pedal up Fromme or Seymour fairly easily, yet still take the days of shuttling in stride.

After weighing some options and trying out a few bikes I decided that it was time to just get the bike that I’ve always wanted. Conveniently we are now a dealer of it - The Ibis Mojo HD. I took the plunge and ordered the bike. Wanting a splash of color, but not too much, I ordered the nude finish along with the red highlights. Your color options are nude, vitamin p and white, along with black, red and blue highlights (lower link, link plate and seat collar).

Planning of my build began with the frame, and progressed to the drive train. I wanted to put on reliable equipment which would not break the bank, yet perform well. My drivetrain included an SLX Crankset, Chromag Chainring, XT derailleur, and XTR shifter. All of these work well very well allowing me to get on the bike and not worry about whether it is going to perform or not.

I opted for the RP23 in the rear, and a Lyrik DH Coil up front. I will probably swap out to an air fork at some point, but the Lyrik seems to be doing the trick for the time being. The RP23 is performing above expectation. I’m not feeling any need to swap the air over to a coil shock.

For the weight weenies out there, the bike comes in at 30.33 lbs, and is an XL frame.

I’m very impressed with the way this bike handles everything I throw at it. If I want it to go up, it goes up. If I want to to go down, it goes down. It’s fantastic. I have taken it off a few drops, down rocky chutes, along skinnies and up technical climbs. It has taken it all in stride, and always been able to do more. Any limitation I have discovered has been on account of my lack of skill, endurance or power. Not once has the bike left me wishing for more travel, stiffness or responsiveness.

It has been a long time since I have been blown away by the abilities of a bike, and this bike has done that. It has exceeded my expectations (which were admittedly quite high), and proved to me that carbon fiber does have a place in the mountain bike world.

I was hesitant that a California based company could develop a bike that would be able to handle the rigors of the North Shore. Ibis has not only built one that can take all the shore has to offer, they have built one that excels at it. I’m stoked to have this bike, and am looking forward to pushing its limits along with my own.
